Roof colour guide

Best roof colours for a stucco house

Stucco houses split into two families. The Spanish and Mediterranean style wants tile or a roof that looks like tile. The modern stucco box wants metal or a flat dark shingle. Decide which family your house is in first, and the colour follows.

White stucco

Terracotta clay tile on white stucco is the classic Spanish look and it is hard to beat in the Southwest and Florida. For a modern house, black standing seam on white stucco is the current favourite and it is the render at the top of the page.

Beige and sand stucco

Warm stucco takes brown, terracotta and dark bronze. Black can look harsh against beige in strong sun. If you want a dark roof, charcoal is softer.

Grey stucco

Grey stucco is a modern finish and it wants a modern roof. Black or charcoal metal, or a dark flat tile. Terracotta on grey stucco rarely works.

Tile or metal

Real clay tile is heavy and expensive. Concrete tile is cheaper and heavier still. Stone-coated steel in a tile profile gives the shape at a fraction of the weight, and it can be rendered on your house below so you can see whether the shape reads from the street.

Flat roofs

A lot of stucco houses have a flat or low-slope roof you cannot see from the street. If that is yours, the roof colour barely matters and the choice is about the membrane. We render TPO membrane too, mostly so owners can see how a white roof changes the look from above.

Try it on your stucco

Stucco texture changes how a roof colour reads next to it, which is why the same terracotta looks right on one house and wrong on the next. Upload a photo and compare tile, black metal and brown.

Real before and after

Each pair is one photo, rendered. The house, the light and the surroundings are untouched. Only the roof changes.

Terracotta tile for a Spanish or Mediterranean house. Black or charcoal metal for a modern house. Brown for a transitional look.
