Black on white
The strongest contrast there is. The roofline becomes a hard edge, black windows and doors join up with it, and the house reads as new. This is the modern farmhouse and the modern stucco look. The pair at the top of the page is a white stucco house going from grey shingle to black standing seam.
Black on tan and beige
Black gives tan siding definition it never had. It also makes white trim look freshly painted. The risk is a house that looks top-heavy if the roof is very large, as on a ranch, where charcoal is softer.
Black on grey
Black on light grey is clean and modern. Black on dark grey becomes one block, which some people want and most do not. If your siding is charcoal, consider bronze instead.
Black on brick
Black lets red brick be the colour of the house. It is the safe choice on brick, with charcoal a close second.
Shingle or metal
Black shingles are matte and forgiving. Black standing seam is flat and sharp and shows the roofline. Same colour, very different roof. Render both on your house before you choose.
Heat
A black roof absorbs more heat than a light one. With a ventilated attic and modern shingles or coated metal the cooling cost difference is small in most climates. In Arizona or Florida, charcoal gives most of the look for less heat.
