Roof colour guide

Best roof colours for a grey house

Grey siding is everywhere now and it comes in three very different versions. Light grey behaves like white. Medium grey needs contrast. Dark charcoal siding needs a roof that does not turn the whole house into one block. Pick your grey first, then the roof.

Light grey siding

Treat it like a white house. Black and charcoal roofs make it modern. Brown and weathered wood warm it up. Almost nothing fails on light grey except a light grey roof, which makes the house look like a single unpainted surface.

Medium grey siding

This is where contrast matters. A black roof works. A charcoal roof can be too close to the siding and lose the roofline. Brown, bronze and weathered wood are underrated here, because the warm roof stops the grey from looking cold.

Dark grey or charcoal siding

A dark house wants a roof that is either the same black for a monolithic modern look or a clearly different colour. Bronze, copper and weathered wood all separate the roof from the walls. Medium grey looks like a mismatch.

Blue and green undertones

Many greys lean blue or green. A blue-grey house takes a black or slate roof. A green-grey house takes brown and bronze. Hold a white sheet of paper against the siding to see which way it leans.

Metal on a grey house

Standing seam in black on grey siding is the most requested modern combination we render. Galvalume, the plain silver finish, also works on grey and is cheaper than a painted panel.

Check it on your own siding

Grey is the colour most affected by its undertone, so a chart is nearly useless. Upload a photo and try black, brown and bronze. The render keeps your siding exactly as it is.

Real before and after

Each pair is one photo, rendered. The house, the light and the surroundings are untouched. Only the roof changes.

Questions

What colour roof goes with grey siding?
Black for light and medium grey. Brown, bronze or weathered wood if the grey is cool and you want warmth. For charcoal siding, either match with black or contrast with bronze or copper.
Can a grey house have a grey roof?
Only if the two greys are far apart, a light wall with a charcoal roof for example. Two similar greys flatten the house.
What colour metal roof goes with a grey house?
Black standing seam is the most popular. Bronze and galvalume also work. Bright colours rarely suit grey siding.
Can I see a roof colour on my grey house before I buy?
Yes. Upload a photo on this page and RoofRender renders it on your house in about 30 seconds. Three renders are free, no card.
